Portable Standing Desk

At home and at Ideas and Coffee, Janet uses a collapsible stool as a standing desk for her laptop.

Inspired by the Traveling Eileen by Therese WillKomm, Alice suggested making a lighter, portable one out of corrugated plastic. This portable standing laptop desk is made up of two identical Traveling Eileens with one right-side up (triangle base down) and the second upside-down (triangle base up). One of the features of the traveling Eileen is its adjustable slant angle. Any slant angle translates to particular height for our portable standing desk. So adjustments to the slant angle translates to adjustments to the height of our portable standing desk — from Janet’s experience, she knows that not all desks/workstations are of the same height. So, this portable standing desk height can be adjusted to accommodate for these differences while she’s traveling.

We encourage you to watch the above and other videos by Dr. Willkomm. Her books, Assistive Technology Solutions in Minutes Books I and II are full of ideas for useful Assistive Technologies made of everyday items. Please note that 505access does not benefit from the sales of Dr. WillKomm’s books. It is the dissemination of useful DIY techniques that benefits all of us.
